Types of Safari Vehicles in Tanzania
At Monkey Adventures, your safety and comfort are paramount, which is why we use custom-built 4x4 Toyota Land Cruisers — renowned for their durability, reliability, and superior performance across East Africa’s rugged landscapes. Expertly converted by RSA, the region’s most trusted safari vehicle specialist, these Land Cruisers are meticulously maintained and field-tested through countless safaris. We offer several configurations to suit different needs, including standard models used by 90% of our clients, side-canvas vehicles tailored for photographers, and air-conditioned options for enhanced comfort. Here’s the difference between the 3 vehicles:
Standard Safari Land Cruiser:
Spacious and robust, the Standard safari Land Cruiser provides ample room for passengers to move freely during long drives, while its exceptional shock absorption delivers a smooth ride even on the rough roads near national parks. Its elevated structure and large windows offer excellent visibility and unobstructed views, which is perfect for wildlife spotting. Its high ground clearance and rugged build make it ideal for navigating tough terrains, from rocky tracks to remote stream crossings. The Land Cruiser comes with a pop-up roof that provides partial shade during game drives. While the roof remains lifted for better views, it doesn’t fully come off, so you'll still be protected from direct sunlight overhead.
Side Canvas Land Cruiser:
The Side Canvas Land Cruiser offers the same level of comfort, reliability and durability as the Standard Land Cruiser, with the only difference being in their design and functionality. The Side Canvas Land Cruiser is equipped with large canvas windows on the sides which can be rolled up and down, offering an ideal balance of comfort, safety, and protection from the elements during highway travel between parks, while still allowing wide, unobstructed views through the windows during game drives. The Side Canvas Land Cruiser costs USD 20 per day more than the Standard Safari Land Cruiser.
Standard Safari Land Cruiser with Air Conditioning:
As the name suggests, this vehicle is the same as the Standard Safari Land Cruiser, but with Air Conditioning, offering a more comfortable experience if it gets too hot. AC vents are also available in the back portion of the Land Cruiser. However, the requirement of AC in Tanzania is limited, as it's usually not hot and the windows can be opened during transfers to let the fresh air in. Additionally, during game drives, rooftop windows are kept open.
However, there is a section of road between Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti that has gravel and gets quite dusty, which requires the windows to remain closed. This section is crossed during the middle of the day, so it can get a bit warm for a short duration (about 1.5 hours each way). To avoid discomfort during this section, you can opt for a safari Land Cruiser with AC. The Standard Land Cruiser with Air Conditioning costs USD 10 per day more than the Standard Safari Land Cruiser.
