Let us see what Tanzania looks like in September in detail.

Climate and Landscape

September, falling within the dry season, marks a peak period for safaris, although crowds tend to slightly diminish as schools and colleges resume globally. If you're not constrained by school schedules, opting for a safari in September rather than June, July, or August is a viable choice, despite the sustained high accommodation costs. Right in the heart of the dry season, September experiences even drier surroundings, showcasing deeper hues of yellows and browns, with short grasses and minimal humidity. This season ensures reduced tsetse flies and mosquitoes, providing excellent viewing conditions. Expect temperatures ranging from 15°C / 59°F to 28°C / 82°F during this time.

Crowds and Accommodations

Despite being amidst the peak season, September witnesses a gradual decrease in crowds as schools and colleges resume. While accommodation costs remain high, the reduced visitor numbers contribute to a slightly more peaceful safari experience. Nevertheless, you must still plan in advance to secure preferred lodges.

Serengeti

In September, the Wildebeest reside predominantly in the Northern region of Serengeti and Masai Mara in Kenya. While in Serengeti, getting close to migration herds also allows you to explore the distinctive landscapes of the Northern region, featuring small hills and valleys uncommon in traditional Serengeti scenery. This area is home to the popular Oribis, as well as other iconic herbivores like giraffes, elephants, and gazelles. Water bodies in the region host hippos and crocodiles, while big cats abound in this diverse and captivating Northern section.

Moreover, besides the Northern region, Serengeti in general remains a great location throughout the year, with Central Serengeti specifically standing out as an exceptional destination in September. Central Serengeti, known for its famous Seronera Valley teeming with big cats and earning it the name of the Big Cat Capital, offers unparalleled wildlife experiences. Alongside the impressive population of big cats, Central Serengeti is also home to a variety of other animals such as giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, warthogs, elephants, impalas, and more. Its landscape features the classic Serengeti grasslands and is studded with stunning kopjes where you can often find animals lounging about or observing their surroundings. Therefore, Central Serengeti remains an excellent location to visit in September and throughout the year.

Leopards will be camouflaged in the woodlands, while lions are likely to be found lounging in the shade near water bodies frequented by herbivores. Despite some dustiness, adding walking safaris and night safaris will bring an enjoyable dimension to your trip.

Starfish Zanzibar

Zanzibar

September brings a serene and breezy atmosphere to Zanzibar. Slight increases in sea temperatures make it an ideal time for diving and snorkeling. With calming winds, even the more challenging ocean regions, including diving sites and channels, become more accessible. While the decrease in winds may affect water sports like kitesurfing, it offers improved opportunities for diving, snorkeling, and exploration of more demanding areas. While the Nungwi region remains bustling as usual, Matemwe and Pingwe experience reduced crowds during this time.

Pemba and Mafia Islands

Similarly, Pemba Island welcomes dry and sunny exploration, perfect for snorkeling and diving. Its remote location promises a less crowded escape compared to Zanzibar. For an even more secluded experience, venture to Mafia Islands, where September may coincide with turtle hatchings on Juani Island. The whale sharks will be arriving in this region in September so you can even grab the opportunity to spot them while you’re snorkeling or diving. Embrace the tranquility of this remote destination, ideal for those seeking solitude amid natural beauty.

Southern Circuit

As the sun rises over Tanzania's Southern Circuit in September, a warm and dry atmosphere envelops the landscape, setting the stage for an unforgettable safari adventure. The skies are clear, painted with hues of blue that stretch endlessly, promising days filled with exploration and wildlife encounters.

Within the parks of the Southern Circuit, visibility is exceptional during this time. The dry season has stripped the foliage, revealing a savannah painted in earthy tones. This lack of dense vegetation makes it easier to spot wildlife, from majestic elephants to elusive cheetahs, as they roam freely across the plains. Game drives become a thrilling experience, with dusty roads offering a pathway to encounters with nature's most magnificent creatures.

One of the perks of visiting in September is the tranquil ambiance that accompanies fewer crowds. Unlike the bustling peak season, this month allows for a more intimate connection with nature. It's a time to savor the beauty of the wilderness without distractions, immersing oneself in the rhythm of life that pulses through the parks.

As the days progress, the wildlife activity reaches its peak. Animals gather around watering holes, their presence creating a mesmerizing spectacle against the backdrop of a changing landscape. Predators seize the opportunity, their predatory instincts heightened by the concentration of prey near water sources.

For those seeking more than game drives, walking safaris offer a chance to delve deeper into the heart of the wilderness. Guided by experienced rangers, every step unveils hidden wonders, from intricate bird species to tracks left by passing herds.

While the landscape may appear dry and brown in parts, it's a testament to nature's resilience and adaptation. Migratory animals may still be on their journey, yet the resident wildlife paints a vibrant picture of life in the Southern Circuit.

Ruaha National Park, with its diverse wildlife populations, stands as a testament to the wonders of September safaris. Elephants roam freely, lions bask in the sun, and cheetahs showcase their speed across the plains. Nyerere National Park, nestled along the Rufiji River, offers a glimpse into a thriving ecosystem where elephants, lions, and crocodiles thrive. Mikumi National Park, easily accessible yet teeming with wildlife, presents an ideal setting for a shorter safari experience.

In September, Tanzania's Southern Circuit is not just a destination—it's a journey into the heart of untamed beauty, where every moment brings new discoveries and unforgettable memories.

Western Circuit

Venturing into Tanzania's Western Circuit in September unveils a landscape painted in warm hues under the dry season's embrace. Similar to the Southern Circuit, this region offers clear skies and pleasant temperatures, setting the stage for a remarkable safari experience.

The park conditions in September strike a balance, with foliage thinned by the dry season yet not as sparse as in the Southern Circuit. This provides good visibility for wildlife enthusiasts, making game drives and hikes rewarding endeavors. While crowds are slightly fewer compared to the peak season, the allure of chimpanzee trekking draws visitors seeking unique encounters.

September proves to be a prime time for chimpanzee trekking in Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains National Parks. The dry season prompts chimps to spend more time on the ground, making them easier to find amidst the trees. For those embarking on this adventure, the month offers ideal conditions with clear paths and increased chimpanzee activity.

While the Western Circuit may not boast the same abundance of wildlife as its southern counterpart, it presents a diverse array of species. Colobus monkeys sway through the trees, shoebill storks grace the wetlands, and sightings of elephants, lions, and various antelope species add to the allure of the region. September sees animals congregating near water sources, providing ample opportunities for memorable encounters.

Chimpanzee trekking stands as the hallmark activity, offering a glimpse into the lives of these fascinating primates. Beyond trekking, game drives unveil the Western Circuit's wildlife diversity, with glimpses of lions, elephants, giraffes, and antelopes adding excitement to every outing. Boat safaris on Lake Tanganyika provide a serene perspective, showcasing hippos, crocodiles, and a myriad of bird species against the picturesque backdrop of the lake.

As with any destination, there are pros and cons to visiting the Western Circuit in September. The conditions favor chimpanzee trekking enthusiasts, with fewer crowds and pleasant weather enhancing the experience. However, wildlife abundance may not match the Southern Circuit, and the landscape may appear dry in parts.

Gombe Stream National Park beckons with its renowned chimpanzee experiences, offering a window into the world of these intelligent creatures. Mahale Mountains National Park provides a remote and immersive trekking experience, while Katavi National Park stands as a testament to wilderness and wildlife diversity, albeit with some lodge closures during this shoulder season.

In September, Tanzania's Western Circuit invites adventurers to explore a realm where chimpanzees reign supreme, wildlife thrives in varied landscapes, and every moment promises discovery and wonder amidst nature's grandeur.

Monkey Adventures planned and executed a really good 10 day safari in Tanzania. During the planning stage they responded quickly to questions and changes. They also have useful options to pay in a variety of currencies potentially saving you exchange rate fees. The trip plan was well thought through with good connections, reducing long drives effectively. All the accommodations were of a good standard and the food of decent quality. Our driver (Cosmos Togolani) was absolutely brilliant, a veritable gold mine of information on so many things both relating to the animals and Tanzania itself. It was a pleasure to spend the 10 days with him. Cosmos really added something to our safari trip and we would highly recommend him. He has the ability to tell you lots but not talk non stop for 10 days! We do recommend Monkey Adventures as we had no major problems at all and had a wonderful trip.

Lois L Tanzanian Safari with Monkey Adventures Couples

We have just returned from a wonderful 6 days / 5 night Safari to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro crater, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire. Monkey Adventures, Sylvia, responded quickly to all our enquiries regarding accommodation choices and what to expect on the Safari. The star of our holiday was John, our guide and driver for the trip. He worked tirelessly to ensure we had great views of the wildlife while driving us through pretty rough terrain. Nothing was too much trouble, and he always greeted us with a smile. His knowledge of the animals, geography, and local Maasai culture really added to our adventure. All transfers and bookings went smoothly despite being constantly on the move. Overall, I would absolutely recommend Monkey Adventures for a safari in Tanzania.

Laura C Best Tour!! Couples

The safari with Monkey Tours and their guide John, was an amazing experience which we can recommend to all. We were glad to have managed to do and see all that we wished to do and see, and more. If you get the chance, also book the hot air balloon experience which was an additional great highlight to our trip. Monkey Tours thanks for the top planning & many great recommendations! To all those thinking of booking with Monkey Tours, we only have praise for them. The guide that they assigned to us, John, was really good. Not only was he knowledgeable about the many animals we saw (thanks to him and his great spotting skills), but he also ensured that we had the best trip ever. He was very easy to get along with, always greeted us with a smile and was a pleasure to meet & spend 9 days with. You really have a great employee on your team who goes above and beyond for the clients! Would definitely book with Monkey Tours again for our next safari experience!

This safari experience will forever be treasured by us and we look forward to recommending John and your company with our family and friends back home.
