Tanzania Safari in May
May in Tanzania is a time of contrasts, offering both challenges and rewards as the extended rainy season unfolds. While thunderstorms and reduced tourist activity characterise the first half of the month, creating vibrant landscapes and unique wildlife encounters away from the usual crowds, the second half brings drier weather, continued discounts, and fewer visitors, making it an appealing period for budget-conscious travellers seeking a tranquil safari experience.
Let us first look at the pros and cons of visiting in May quickly, and then we will address aspects like climate and accommodations, and look at each park in the Northern Circuit and Zanzibar in detail:

Let us see now what Tanzania looks like in May in detail.
Climate and Landscape
In May, Tanzania experiences a transition in weather patterns. The first half of the month marks the extended rainy season with daily heavy showers and thunderstorms, particularly during the night. Daytime tours may encounter brief interruptions due to rain, but overall, expect overcast conditions with occasional showers. Towards the end of the month, there's a noticeable shift as the extended rainy season concludes. The second half of May sees very little rainfall, resulting in more stable and dry weather conditions. The temperatures stay below 30°C / 86°F during the day, dropping to around 14°C / 57°F at night, particularly in higher-altitude regions like Ngorongoro.
Accommodations and Crowds
Being the low season, May witnesses limited tourism, resulting in the closure of numerous lodges and shops. Despite the reduced options, several accommodations remain available, often offering enticing discounts to visitors. While the humidity might contribute to warmer conditions, the lower number of tourists provides an opportunity to explore with fewer crowds.
Moving into the second half of May, the weather becomes relatively drier, with very little rainfall compared to the earlier part of the month. Despite this, accommodations continue to offer enticing discounts and crowds remain low. This combination of low-cost accommodations, minimal crowds, and improved weather conditions in the second half of May makes it an ideal time for budget-conscious travellers looking to explore Tanzania without the usual tourist rush.
Serengeti
In the Serengeti, May witnesses vibrant young calves gaining strength and vitality and things pick up pace. The month marks a pivotal period as the calves develop the strength needed for migration. Consequently, the Migration gains momentum, and begins moving westward and northward. Early and mid-May herds can be found in South-West and West Serengeti, and they progress to the Western corridor by month-end. Besides the wildebeests, a variety of popular african animals grace the landscape. Lush green landscape eliminate concerns of dusty roads, although you can only access the main routes, and may have to navigate through muddy, bumpy terrain.
Moreover, besides the mentioned region, Serengeti in general remains a great location throughout the year, with Central Serengeti specifically standing out as a remarkable destination in May. Central Serengeti is renowned for its famous Seronera Valley, teeming with big cats and earning it the name of the Big Cat Capital. Along with the impressive population of big cats, Central Serengeti is also home to a variety of other animals like elephants, elands, impalas, buffalos, hyenas and more. Its landscape features the classic Serengeti grasslands and is studded with stunning kopjes where you can often find animals lounging about or observing their surroundings, making Central Serengeti an excellent location to visit in May and throughout the year.

Tarangire
In Tarangire, early May poses challenges to game viewing due to lush greenery and muddy roads. However, with patience one can find elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes, lions, and more. The situation evolves positively towards late May as the rainy season concludes, leading to the drying of watering holes. This compels the wildlife to return to perennial river Tarangire within the park, and the remaining watering holes, boosting the animal population within the park once again. Birders, meanwhile, find abundant opportunities to observe endemic and migratory birds.

Ngorongoro
Ngorongoro, similar to other parks, thrives in May with dense vegetation gradually giving way to drier conditions. The serenity of the region, coupled with reduced tourist traffic, facilitates uninterrupted exploration, and allows you to get closer to the wildlife.

Lake Manyara
Lake Manyara mirrors the lush ambiance of other parks, boasting thriving ecosystems. However, navigating the roads in this park pose even more challenges as they may wash away or flood during the rainy season. Despite road conditions, the park offers diverse animals and birds, requiring cautious exploration.

Island Getaways:
Zanzibar
In Zanzibar, early May confronts heavy rains, gradually transitioning to drier conditions by month-end. The latter part of May offers sunnier days and more predictable weather, as the receding monsoon introduces the winds. This shift not only provides a relief from showers but also opens avenues for thrilling activities like kitesurfing and parasailing. While early May may not provide an optimal Zanzibar experience, considering it towards the month's close might prove favourable.
Mafia Island
Mafia Island shares Zanzibar's conditions, experiencing low rainfall and improved predictability in weather towards the month's end. The island's remote and less touristy ambiance adds to its appeal, making it an ideal escape for those seeking tranquility away from crowds.
Pemba
Pemba, in May, might still be encountering more rainfall compared to Zanzibar and Mafia Island. Similar to its counterparts, Pemba's remote and less touristy atmosphere appeals to those yearning for a serene experience. For birdwatchers, May is an excellent time to indulge in this hobby. The parks host both resident bird species and migratory birds, creating a vibrant avian spectacle. The lush vegetation provides ample opportunities to spot colorful and unique bird species in their natural habitats.
All safari activities are available during this time, including game drives, boat safaris, and walking safaris. Walking safaris, in particular, offer a unique perspective on the environment, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the Southern Circuit up close.
Despite the advantages of visiting in May, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. While rain showers are less frequent than earlier months, there is still a chance of encountering some precipitation. Additionally, road conditions might be slightly challenging in certain areas due to lingering mud.
Overall, May presents a balanced opportunity for travelers to experience the Southern Circuit of Tanzania. With fewer crowds compared to the peak dry season, lush green scenery transitioning into drier landscapes, pleasant temperatures, excellent wildlife viewing, and rewarding birdwatching opportunities, May is an inviting time to explore the beauty and diversity of the Southern Circuit's parks such as Ruaha National Park, Nyerere National Park (Selous Game Reserve), and Mikumi National Park.

Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) showcases lush vegetation, diverse wildlife including elephants, lions, and cheetahs, and excellent birdwatching opportunities, albeit with some roads potentially becoming inaccessible due to the wet season.
Mikumi National Park, known for its compact yet diverse wildlife population including zebras, wildebeest, lions, elephants, and healthy giraffe numbers, remains accessible and captivating in May, making it a popular choice for a safari adventure.

This makes it an excellent time for nature enthusiasts to observe a diverse range of wildlife in their natural habitats. Birdwatching remains excellent, with a mix of resident and migratory birds adding color and melody to the surroundings.
All safari activities, including game drives, boat safaris where applicable, and chimpanzee trekking in parks like Gombe Stream National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park, are available. However, there are considerations to keep in mind, such as the possibility of encountering some rain showers, particularly early in May, and potentially challenging road conditions in certain areas. Nevertheless, these challenges are outweighed by the overall experience of witnessing the Western Circuit's beauty as it transitions from the wet season to a drier phase, offering a unique perspective for travelers seeking adventure and natural wonders.

hfox Once in a lifetime Safari with Monkey Adventures!!! Family
I want to begin by saying, this trip was an outstanding, unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience that I highly recommend. I am so glad we booked our safari with Monkey adventures, and were placed with our incredible guide, Cosmas. My mom and I went on a 6 day safari in Tanzania to Tarengere National Park, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. We stopped along the way at towns, shops and in a Masai village. Our driver and guide, Cosmas, was a wonderful person and educator. He shared so much with us about the culture in Tanzania, educated us about the animals we saw on safari, and even taught us a bit of Swahili! He went above and beyond to give us an incredible experience. He was amazing at spotting animals near and far! He even sang with us in the car on the long stretches between destinations. He went above and beyond to help my mom and I shop in a few local markets-- to get a good price and interpret for us. He was so much more than a driver and guide; he became our friend.
I am so glad we booked our safari with Monkey Adventures; they are organized and super professional-- and it's a local business to Tanzania, which I feel is important to support. They offer very fair pricing, in comparison to some ex-pat and European or US safari companies. As a customer, you choose the lodges where you stay throughout your trip, and they have an array of options to suit all desires and budgets. I highly recommend this safari company, to organize your adventure. They will not disappoint!
Rohan 3-day Safari across Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater Friends
Monkey adventures was absolutely perfect! We were beyond impressed with their ability to set up and execute this safari. They picked us up and dropped us off at the airport. They set up our accomodations in Arusha and were perfectly on schedule for departure on our Safari.
We were told that the rainy season encompassed April and May, the heart of our trip. We saw ZERO rain on the Serengeti and in the crater. The set up in the vehicle was perfect and was ideal for roughly 3-4 people. My fiance and I took the trip with another friend of ours and we were all BLOWN AWAY by the experience and plan to not make this our last safari.
Josie C The Perfect Safari Friends
We were thoroughly impressed with Monkey Adventures. The tour company was extremely professional from the moment we were collected from Kilimanjaro airport. They dropped us at our hotel and gave us a briefing about what to expect over the next few days. Given we were travelling as two girls on our own it was nice to have that extra comfort from the tour company.
Our guide Frank Joseph was exceptional, and had all of the qualities needed to be a really great guide. He was knowledgable, friendly, passionate about his job and the animals, had a great eye for spotting game and also had a lot of patience.
The accommodation organised for us in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater was fantastic. We stayed in tents (but with bed and bathroom) which allowed us to get within close proximity to nature. The food at each location was great, and staff were very hospitable. We stayed at Tortillis Camp, Mugani Camp and Rhino Lodge and we were made very welcome. On one night we changed camp (at very late notice) to be closer to the migration as it is hard to predict in advance where it will be, Monkey Adventures organised this and we appreciated the flexibility.
We spotted more animals than we ever imagined and could not have been happier with the tour company and especially our guide Frank who gave us the experience we will never forget!
Thank you Monkey Adventures!
